Burnett's carries a line of window bars, manufactured in Winnipeg, designed mainly for basement windows, although by doubling or installing vertically they can be adapted for many larger windows. There are two basic types: fixed, and a hinged version designed to be opened allowing escape in the event of a fire. The escape version is recommended for basement bedrooms.
Here is a list of types and the approximate size of window they can be used for:
BB-1 Bar: 1 horizontal bar. Will fit a window up to 10" high x 36" long.
BB-2 Bar: 2 horizontal bars. Will fit a window up to 18" high x 36" long.
BB-3 Bar: 3 horizontal bars. Will fit a window up to 24" high x 36" long.
BB-4 Bar: 4 horizontal bars. Will fit a window up to 32" high x 36" long.
In addition to these basic window bars, three different variations are available:

A long version of the 2, 3, and 4 bar versions which adds 12", to a maximum length of 48".

Escape Bars: The 2, 3, and 4 bars are also available with escape hinging.

The long version expandable to 48" is also available in escape configuration.
There are also extensions available in the 2, 3, and 4 bar versions which allow both the regular and fixed bars to be extended an extra 12".
All of the above bars come with wood screws to attach the bar to the window framing. The fixed bars also should use 2 tamper proof screws per side to prevent quick removal. The escape bars are designed in such a way that the screws are not accessible when the bar is closed. Note: The escape window bars also require a padlock.
The bars are stocked in black only, but can be special ordered in other colours at an extra charge.
